Spy Cases of The Cold War
The Cold War used spies as a way of acquiring knowledge of what the others were doing. Spies were also sent to spread false knowledge of what one side was doing. Being a spy was very dangerous and had a very little chance of being rescued if caught. Many spies were tortured when caught. Most spies were 18 years old, graduating from high school ready to start a career and military pulled them into involvement of the Cold War. During this job, spies explored all over searching for information to help their country. All the actions that spies do is life threatening, but still tried for their country. In the end of the Cold War, the spies stopped their work and finished life with the military or family and work. Many spies were killed during this time, but others survived. The impact caused by the USSR greatly affect the United States. USSR caused the United States to build up its nuclear weapons to stop the spread of Soviet influence around the globe. The bomb was released on august 29, 1949 and cause the United Sates and USSR to start a nuclear race. Many cases were done from the use of spies such as the example below.
John Cairncross
John Cairncross was born into a large family that seemed unlikely to have a spy. His family consisted of college graduates and his mother was a humble teacher. Yet he turned from having a civil servant job into becoming a mysterious double agent during War World II.
In 1942 and 1943 Cairncross worked in GC and GS Bletchley Park on ULTRA ciphers. This was all top secret agent work that involved his work in decipher messages and secret codes. He didn't get caught spying and then didn't confess to it until 1951. He soon lost his job and had to move to the United States where he worked as a professor at North-western University. He wrote three books and translated many while there. He then moved to Rome and that is where his third and final confession got him labelled as the "fifth man" of the KGB. He would eventually retire and get married. He died in Britain when he was 82. |
